Friends of New Orleans

The Friends of New Orleans is a band with members collected from other New Orleans style related bands in the Netherlands. It’s led by drummer Cees Hoogkamer who plays regularly with Brian Carrick in the UK. The band plays some good old New Orleans jazz stuff based on the originals like George Lewis and DeDe Pierce. The Friends of New Orleans has some great names in it like: Bruno van Acoleyen on trumpet and Jos Koster or Wouter Nouwens on banjo.

Gravier Street Jazzmen

This band was founded in 2004, led by clarinetplayer Will van Gessel. Will is a Ken Colyer adept and the repertoire of this band is very much Ken Colyer and Chris Barber related. Old Dutch jazzmen like Jaap Mook on trumpet and Wim Deutekom on Banjo are also in this band.

La Vida Jazz Band

The La Vida Jazz Band is the oldest New Orleans Style Jazz Band in the Netherlands. Formed and led by trumpeter Adam Olivier since 1973. The band has played lots of gigs with old New Orleans veterans like, Louis Nelson, Joe Thomas, Milton Batiste, Alton Purnell and Sam Lee. Since ’88 I’ve been there on trombone. It’s by far the roughest and bluest white band I know. The repertoire is very versatile, from standards to R&B and Latin numbers.

Little Band
(no picture available)

This band is formed by Albert Klein. Albert owns a record company ‘Little Label’. We play regulary in Albert’s recording studio. He has a extensive collection of clarinets and other instruments and cd’s as well. The other outstanding member of this band is Frederick H. Sayles. He is a multi-instrumentalist. Freddy plays piano, banjo, guitar, harmonica, kazoo, bongo and slide-whistle, and plays them all very well. Freddy is also a New Orleans Jazz collector and knows very much about recordings and history of the jazz music. This band is a very small group and performes with a variable line-up.

Ponchartrain Jazz Band

This band is from my hometown Lelystad and I play more than ten years with this formation. It’s led by Sousaphone and Tubaplayer Bert Velderman, a very good friend of mine. Bert sells vintage brass instruments. This band performs with a line up of four, five or six players and can do any job at any time!

Silver Leaf Brass Band

The Silver Leaf is the oldest traditional Brass Band in the Netherlands. Like La Vida Jazz Band, the Silver Leaf is led by Adam Olivier. From the beginning there is a remarkable Grand Marshall in front. His name is Klaas Hoogstede and he lives in a windy area in Kolham near Groningen. The Silver Leaf Brass Band is based on good old Harold Dejan’s Olympia Brass Band from New Orleans.

The Tulane Jazz Quartet

In 2002 I formed the Tulane Jazz Quartet. I had studied the famous George Lewis/Don Ewell quartet from ’66 and I’ve wrote a reader about it. So it was time to start music based on this quartet. Since then the Tulane Quartet played on different occasions and we are going are own way with this quartet. Jaap de Wit jr on drums, Ronald Wildering on Clarinet and alto sax and my brother Emile on piano complete this quartet.

The Young Tulane Jazz Band

In this new pick up band I try to combine young talents like the wonderful Carmen Vos on piano, and Bram van Tongeren who’s very much into Bunk Johnson’s style and Harm Hillegers on clarinet, with oldies like Jaap de Wit jr and myself. We performed already at one of the most famous jazzclubs in Belgium named ’t Ol van Pluto led by drummer Philippe DeSmet.

New Orleans Saints

Sometimes I play with the New Orleans Saints. When the great Dutch Kid Ory adept trombone player and friend: Victor Bronsgeest is not available for this band I ‘m called to replace him.

Jasper van Pelt and his Pocket Jazz and Swing Band
